Mentoring

Young people who have mentors have a better chance of succeeding and are more likely to make positive choices. Yet, in Minnesota there are estimated 300,000 at-risk young people who need and could benefit from an adult mentor (Mentoring Minnesota Partnership) . When District 281 students completed the Search Institute Developmental Assets Survey, only 39% of the students indicated they received support from three or more non-parent adults.

You can make a difference. There are many opportunities available to mentor young people within District 281 and community organizations like the mosaic Youth Center. Mentoring is a committed relationship between an adult and a youth focused on developing the character and capabilities of the young person. By definition, a mentor means a wise and trusted friend. Mentoring, whether it is informal or formal, is a wonderful way for caring adults to make a positive difference in a young person’s life.

The mentoring subcommittee is charged with:
  • Connecting young people to adult mentors
  • Creating opportunities for businesses to adopt schools
  • Creating connections for job shadowing opportunities
  • Ensuring mentors are background checked and trained in mentoring
